Note from the Chair

This fall the department welcomed two new postdoctoral fellows, Qiu Lin and Yuna Won, two full-year Visiting Lecturers, Matt Paskell and Dean DaVee, as well as three fall Visiting Lecturers, Quitterie Gounot, Alex Esposito, and Daniel Murphy. We lost a beloved longtime colleague, Professor Emeritus Sydney Shoemaker. Our faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students presented their excellent research all over the world (now in person!). Two papers from our in-house journal, The Philosophical Review  (Louis deRosset, ‘Hollow Truth,’ and J. Dmitri Gallow, ‘A Model-Invariant Theory of Causation’) were chosen for The Philosopher's Annual. Members of our undergraduate philosophy club, Logos, under the leadership of Jacqueline Allen, are busy planning philosophy-related activities and continue to publish its own journal (see more below). Three Logos members have contributed faculty interviews of Rachana Kamtekar, Kate Manne and David Shoemaker which you will also see below.

Logos ~ a glimpse into the activities of the philosophy undergraduate club

The Cornell Undergraduate Philosophy Club and Journal has started the semester with discussions ranging from the ethics of genetic engineering to the necessary and sufficient conditions for something to be considered soup. During early September, Logos hosted a launch party for the most recent edition of its annual undergraduate publication.

Throughout the year, Logos organizes weekly discussions and other events. Every spring, Logos coordinates the Norman Kretzmann Lecture, inviting a distinguished philosopher to campus to give a lecture to undergraduate students.

Plans are almost finalized for the Apocalypse Debate next month! Logos organizes this debate every fall, inviting faculty from different fields to debate which discipline should be preserved for the next generation of sentient life.

Johnson Museum Zen Garden

Logos undergraduates Sophia Gottfried, Ethan Kovnat, and Sam Vucic recently interviewed three faculty members in the department. Their stores: Rachana Kamtekar, From Skygazing Souls to Ideas in Ashes, Kate Manne, Your Body Is for You, and David Shoemaker, A Project in Shared Humanity.
