Kate Manne: Named Finalist for National Book Awards

The 2024 National Book Awards have unveiled their finalists, and among them stands Professor Kate Manne’s remarkable work, “Unshrinking,” as one of the five nonfiction finalists.

On November 20, the winners will be revealed during the 75th National Book Awards Ceremony & Benefit Dinner in New York City. Categories include: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translated literature, and young people's literature.

The National Book Awards' site lists Professor Manne's book as, "...Blending lived experience with meticulous research, Unshrinking: How to Face Fatphobia asserts that weight stigma and discrimination play a part in all aspects of society, including healthcare, education, and employment. Kate Manne argues that fatphobia harms not just individuals, but entire communities and cultures, and coins the term “body reflexivity”—a new politics that reexamines and deconstructs why bodies exist in the first place and seeks to build a world that is welcoming for people of all sizes."

Winners of the National Book Award receive a $10,000 cash prize and statue. All finalists will receive a bronze medal, $1,000, and a judges' citation. The Awards Ceremony is one of the most anticipated events for writers, publishers, and readers eager to celebrate the best books of the year.
